Gentrification or not, feeling safe in a community is directly proportionate to how neighborly YOU are.
If you speak with your neighbors and walk the neighborhood, people will get to know you and look out for your behalf. You get what you give.
The murder Esme Barrera in a central Austin, which is supposedly a “good area” should be a sign that random acts of violence can happen to anyone, anywhere.
I just wish people would get over themselves, crossover I-35 and come see how vibrant the 78702 really is. I’ve lived here almost 8 months and feel like my neighbors have become a part of my extended family. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
As I was driving on Cesaer Chavez, broken mirror shards caught my eye and I turned on Chicon to investigate. Have I mentioned lately, how much I love living in East Austin? Vibrant street art can be found at every turn.
Stephanie Distefano’s Mahatma Gandhi and The Virgin are the latest addition to the evolving urban art gallery that is the Eastsiide. The walls and abandoned pay phones of East First Grocery have been transformed into familiar visages made of custom tile and glass.
The first thing that caught my eye about Hill County Perogi was the very Boston Red Sox looking signage. Thankfully for this Austin Yankee, the recent rains have faded the sign a bit, if not my enthusiasm for a taste for their home cooking. My Grandmother was Polish-American, so for me, growing up with Perogi and Kalbasa is as American as Baseball and Apple Pie.
Hill Country Perogi updates traditional savory dumpling ingredients such as potato, cheese, cabbage and beets with a Tex-Mex flair throwing in, Bacon, Chorizo and Gorgonzola among other things. The specials change weekly and sell out fast, so check their Twitter feed to find out what is new before its all gone.
The owners always have a smile for returning customers, reminding me of Grandmas warm kitchen, which keeps me coming back for more.

The Fuehrer is pissed he is going to miss out on getting Franklin BBQ
A year later, I’m still cracking up at this commercial for Franklin BBQ. Ingenious. I wish every Austin eatery came up with ads like this, poking fun at other local food spots.
